A Laparoscope is a small telescope like instrument which is inserted inside the stomach by a very small incision made in or around the navel area. The laparoscopic surgery treats major conditions with smaller incisions thus leading to smaller scar formation. The healing or recovery time with laparoscopic surgeries is also quite lesser than those open surgeries.

Some of the most common laparoscopic surgeries are :

1. Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (TLH)

In this major surgery, uterus is removed along with cervix. The Fallopian tubes and ovaries may or may not be removed, depending upon the reason for which surgery is being performed. Mostly the uterus is taken out of vagina but if it is not possible due to narrowing of vagina or any other reason, then it is pulled out by making an incision on the abdomen. After that the incision is closed with the dissoluble stitches.

2. Ovarian Cystectomy

It is a laparoscopic surgery to remove the cyst from the ovary. Ovarian cysts cause pain during periods and during intercourse. Many patients report pain in the pelvic area as well. Ovarian cysts removal can lead to some vaginal discharge and spotting for a few weeks. After a few weeks you will be able to resume your daily activities.

3. Lap Sterilization

Laparoscopic sterilization is the process of ligating the fallopian tubes so that the sperms can not reach the ovaries. This is the most effective method of contraception when a couple doesn’t need more children. The patients are mostly discharged within a few hours. The recovery is fast and easy.

4. Lap recanalisation

Laparoscopic recanalization or Fallopian Tube recanalisation (FTP) is a method of reversing the sterilization surgery. The recanalisation surgery enables the patient to become pregnant again. The ligated tube is reattached and the connection is made with the help of a laparoscope to ensure the normal function and flow of sperms to the ovary.

Indication of Laparoscopic Gynae Treatments

  1. For pelvic pain
  2. Heavy and painful periods
  3. For infertility
  4. Any pelvic infection

Question 1. What is the benefit of laparoscopic surgery over conventional open surgeries?

Answer. The laparoscopic surgery leads to

  • A smaller incision
  • Shorter healing time
  • Smaller scar

Thus laparoscopic surgery leads to a faster recovery and a better outcome than the major open surgical procedures.

Question 2. Under which anesthesia this surgery is performed?

Answer. In most cases, the laparoscopic surgery is performed under general anesthesia.

Question 3. When will I be discharged after the laparoscopic surgery?

Answer. It depends upon the surgical procedure performed. The minor laparoscopy surgery cases are discharged on the same day usually.

Question 4. When will I be discharged after major procedure such as TLH?

Answer. For the major procedures such as hysterectomy, we keep the patient in the hospital for about 1 to 2 days.

Question 5. When can I resume my normal daily activities after discharge?

Answer. You can resume your daily activities within 2 weeks after discharge but the strenuous activities such as exercising and swimming etc must not be resumed until 4 to 8 weeks or as advised by the gynecologist.
